At Context Matters we believe that when applying agile at scale in the enterprise one needs to do more than just create high performing development teams. Accelerating the sustainable delivery of business value requires an expansion of the focus beyond team-level Agile, to include entire value streams, program and portfolio. It has been our experience that the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) supports enterprises in this endeavour with its proven success patterns for applying Lean and Agile at enterprise scale.

Formed in 2014, Context Matters is the home of Australia’s most experienced Scaled Agile Framework practitioners. The founding partners, Em Campbell-Pretty and Mark Richards launched Australia’s first SAFe Agile Release Train at Telstra in early 2012, a few months prior to the launch of SAFe as a trademarked framework. Em’s SAFe implementation at Telstra was published as an official SAFe case study in 2013, making it one of the first ten SAFe case studies worldwide. The work Em and Mark did at Telstra has been officially recognised as making specific contribution to the evolution of SAFe.

While Em continued to lead the evolution of the EDW Agile Release Train at Telstra, Mark went on to introduce SAFe at Australia Post. In 2014 Context Matters supported the introduction of SAFe at the ATO, IAG, Westpac and RMIT University, with the RMIT implementation also being published as an official SAFe case study.

Both Em and Mark are certified SAFe Program Consultant Trainers (SPCT), a qualification held by only 20 people worldwide and the highest level of certification provided by the Scaled Agile Academy. Together with their team of SAFe Program Consultants (SPC) they have delivered 80% of the certified SAFe training in Australia.

Succeeding with SAFe requires effective alignment of technical capability with business strategy underpinned by a leadership dedicated to creating a culture of continuous improvement. It also requires adapting the framework to your unique organisational context. At Context Matters, we come with proven experience accompanied by a fundamental belief that the solutions should be created by the organisation, not the consultants. In the words of SAFe creator Dean Leffingwell, “the foundation of Lean is Leadership, and the foundation of SAFe is you”.
